One of the disconcerting trends I have seen in Traditionalist circles has been the increasing polarization between “pagans” and “Christians”. Why this is disconcerting should be obvious to any of us who have done any cursory reading, and who realize that the very aim of Traditionalism is to render intelligible the now-decadent Hyperborean roots of all Indo-European beliefs. As such, it makes little sense to criticize each other in this way, because we are quibbling over which fractured tradition is better than any other. As much as I wish there could be a civilized discussion about European spirituality, it is clear that we have hurdles to overcome, much like we had to overcome other hurdles which are a symptomatic of the Kali Yuga: nationalism, Americanism, consumerism, materialism… the list is a long one.

My intention in this piece is to criticize both sides of this divide fairly in an effort to unite our misguided brothers and bring them back into dialogue with each other, so we can progress again and help each other to Ride the Tiger. My observations are based on a great deal of lurking in our various online circles, as well as some of my own personal anecdotes. Please do challenge me if you feel I am wrong. That is, of course, the entire point.

First, I will cursorily offer my critique of the degenerate “Neo-Pagans” whom I trust we all equally disdain. Their ideology is based on a rootless animosity towards authority and particularly religious authority, and so their spirituality manifests most often as the debasing, Southern-hemisphere kind. They are more than comfortable to defend drug use, weakness, socialism, and every kind of perversion in the name of some negative Liberty (freedom in the absence of interference) which they take to be constitutive of pre-Christian life in Europe.

It is often asserted, and I think rightly so, that these types are the same who scant years ago were staunch atheists, who championed rationalism (in reality an extreme form of empiricism) and congregated on r/atheism. They merely grew sick of their deracinated lives and went in search of a cultural identity that was obscure enough to make them seem to be outcasts and “free-thinkers” still. One might cheekily say they traded fedoras and katanas for horned helmets and hammers.

The criticisms here are obvious and well-worn by now. They worship strength but consider the Crusades and Christian evangelization of Europe to have been evil acts of aggression. They consider racialism to be a high crime and cling to moral relativism, but also despise the moral authority of any centralized Church structure. They even consider their gods to be mere metaphors, and so are in all relevant ways atheists, still. They bear, in short, all the hallmarks of Leftists and even more of the cognitive dissonance.

Let us move on.

The modern Pagan is animated primarily, it seems, by an incandescent hatred of Judaism. This comes from the Judaic roots in Africa rather than Europe (Hebrew even belonging to the Afro-Semitic language family rather than the Indo-European one), and is a kind of spiritual miscegenation which, I think rightly, the Pagan finds intolerable. However, to elaborate, his hatred of Christianity draws much of its strength from Christianity’s ties to Judaism, and this causes a number of tragic mistakes to be made in his reasoning. Slurs like “Middle-Eastern” do not engage the reality of the pre-Middle-Eastern Levant. Christ’s “Judaism” is a blood relation to the Tribe of Judah, not a kinship with modern Talmudic Jews. Christ’s entire life was spent formulating a refutation of proto-Judaism, in defence of whatever lost covenant with Yahweh, God of war and fire, the Isrealites had abandoned. And critiques of Christianity as a “death-cult” are laughable because that is exactly what Christians (of any apostolic description) believe. Christianity represents an updated (and diluted) version of the Roman cult of Victory; Christ is victorious over Death itself.

I could continue by dissecting how these Pagans criticize the Bible, but it would be more efficient to dissect their failings. They do not do their homework. Their critiques are often based on English versions of the Bible, translated from the Masoretic text rather than the Septuagint, and taken in much the way that the Protestant cults which they criticize read the Bible: open to interpretation based on the whims of the reader. They likely only know English but LARP as Vikings or Romans, and never stop to consider that Perennialism explicitly speaks to Truth in other traditions. Their very existence is defined negatively as “not like THEM”, because the are animated almost exclusively by their hatred of the Other rather than by any positive sense of identity.

The Judeo-Christian, on the other hand, has an overwhelmingly positive sense of identity. They consider their Christianity (often of a debased and modern type) to be absolutely definitive. These lambs can be found in all denominations, but less often in Orthodox and Traditional Catholic ones, generally. Unfortunately, the Judeo-Christian is everything the Pagan claims him to be and more. His ethnic background is meaningless because “you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). He considers capitalism a fundamental freedom, and wealth a sign of God’s immortal favour. He has embraced Americanism utterly, and is a Patriot who scoffs at divine Kingship, even as he bows before a Christ who was both God and Man. He is a Judaizer even as he is a bigot. He rarely forms his own opinions, and is in all ways a pleb of the devotional-religious type.

This final type is the one I struggle with the most as an Orthodox Hellene myself. I have heard every kind of absurd assertion come out of their mouths. I have heard them criticize Evola as a neo-pagan who stole his ideas from Islam. The irony that Evola not only penned a scathing rebuke of neo-paganism, but also that he owed so much to the staunchly Catholic René Guénon, flies far over their heads. They have insisted on the use of the Church as a tool to eradicate ethnic loyalties, demanding an explanation as to why “you can’t just let Jesus be enough for you?” Perhaps least forgivably, despite their insistence on the wisdom of the Church Fathers, they have strong feelings about St. John Chrysostom’s critique of Judaizing which they keep quiet about, preferring to undermine what was considered foundational, while they brag about Orthodoxy. In short, they destroy even their own history in an effort to adapt to the Kali Yuga.

The burden it great upon us, the last sons and daughters of the Hyperboreans, to keep the Faith through this Dark Age. I hope, if anything, that I have lent you some insight into the various wayward friends we have in the world, that perhaps we may save some of them yet.
